Undocumented migrants are living there under “miserable conditions,” especially in winter, according to a statement disclosed on Friday.
After the fire in the Moira camp last year and its replacement by the Kara Tepe, the camps now look like prisons, with fence and limitations on freedom of movement, according to the NGO’s statement.
Bathrooms in those camps are in bad condition; there are blackouts every day and little running water, among other things, the statement adds.
According to the NGO, the refugees that are living there are exposed to cold and wind chill in the middle of winter because the camp is near the sea.
The statement adds that migrants can only leave the camp for health reasons and only have three hours of freedom twice a week.
The migratory issue, especially in this country’s insular territory, is often discussed by Athens and the European Union, which has criticized the administration of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
