Opposition seeks alliance for presidential election in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Feb 11 (Prensa Latina) Six oppostion groups from Cambodia are seeking a political alliance to run against the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) at next year's general election, the national press reported on Friday. Radio Free Asia (RFA)'s Khmer Service reported that the leaders of those parties, most of whom are former officials of the forbidden Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), said that they would form a block.

According to the source, the goal is to attract other oppostion groups before the early June local elections, but they said they did not have the resources or time to do it.

Instead, they said that they will align to pursue common goals for short-term electoral reforms while they work to form an alliance on time to run against the CPP in the general election of July 2023.

Founder of the Reform Party and former CNRP official, Ou Chanrath, told RFA that the six political movements are working together step by step.

We will seriously discuss how to run against the CPP in the general election. If we are not united, I think running against the ruling party will be difficult, he said.

For his part, Spokesman for the Grassroots Democratic Party, Loek Sothea, said that, although they have been busy preparing their individual platforms in the local elections, they have taken time to work together.
