A spokesman for the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) expressed the earthquake occurred at 04:30 local time and its epicenter was located 35 kilometers south of Funchal, capital of that autonomous region, an archipelago of four islands off the northwest coast of Africa.
