A spokesman for the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) expressed the earthquake occurred at 04:30 local time and its epicenter was located 35 kilometers south of Funchal, capital of that autonomous region, an archipelago of four islands off the northwest coast of Africa.
The effects of the earthquake were also perceived in the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, São Vicente Calheta, Machico, Ponta do Sol, Santa Cruz and Santana, all located on Madeira Island, the source affirmed.
