Lopez Obrador underlines Government’s responsibility for journalists

Mexico City, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Wednesday approved the initiative of journalists to demonstrate against the violence and mistreatment to which they are subjected even by public servants.

Questioned about this situation at his press conference at the National Palace, the president reiterated that his Government’s responsibility is to take care of the lives of journalists and it will continue doing so, but it must be considered that we do not send anyone to liquidate anyone as before, when the State was the first human rights violator.

Journalists will always have the support of the State. If a public servant has mistreated one of them it is no because that is a policy of the State. That person will be punished. It is not our intention to violate the rights of any communicator, we are not repressors.

He criticized the headline in a newspaper that said “They are not killing” and put it in the mouth of a famous journalist in Univision who enjoys a high salary, but another one answered to him and questioned what he had done and was doing.

Lopez Obrador added that this episode reveals the use of others’ pain, it is a manipulation, but now they can use these things to attack us because they are bothered by our allegations.

Why would they silence me if we are defending a project against a mafia that has impoverished Mexico, that has caused the violence that has brought so much suffering to the country? he wondered.
