Cuban president recalls legacy of independence hero

Cuba, Díaz Canel, Vicente Aguilera, legado
Havana, Feb 22 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Tuesday recalled the legacy of Cuban independence hero Francisco Vicente Aguilera, whom he described as one of the mainstays of the island's independence from the Spanish colonial yoke.

On occasion of the 145th anniversary of Aguilera’s death, the president wrote on his Twitter account that this is a “day to pay tribute to Francisco Vicente Aguilera, one of the fathers of the Cuban Revolution.”

Diaz-Canel tweeted that the patriot “dedicated his great fortune to national independence and died poor, without abandoning the sacred cause. Cuba’s dignity sprouts from that seed.”

Francisco Vicente Aguilera y Tamayo (June 23, 1821-February 22, 1877) was one of the richest landowners in the eastern region of Cuba during the second half of the 19th century.
