The president of the National Federation of Associations with critical, chronic and degenerative diseases, Faustina Díaz, expressed that with this measure they hope to have the answer they need so much.

The Vice-President and Minister of the Presidency, José Gabriel Carrizo, headed the table the day before to start looking for solutions to the price and shortage of drugs.

For her part, the Minister of Health in charge, Ivette Berrío, explained that the sectors involved will first focus on the diagnosis of the situation of the costs of medicines and the shortage in the health facilities.

To this end, they will hold weekly meetings to establish specific proposals and a road map to be presented to the head of State, Laurentino Cortizo.

On February 14, the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (Cciap, in Spanish), which is now also part of the government’s strategy, urged the promotion of investment by the pharmaceutical industry to encourage the manufacture of medicines in Panama.

A study by the Central American Competition Policy Group and the Inter-American Development Bank revealed that Panama is the country in the region with the lowest availability of generics, only 6 % of the much more expensive brand-name products.
