Led by Jose Marti, the insurrectional uprising on February 24, 1985, against Spanish colonialism in Cuba was also an action against the advance of imperialism in the Americas, the counselor in charge of consular affairs, Dallamy Diaz, told Prensa Latina.

In the central words of the event, the official recalled the intense organizational work of Jose Marti, who for years prepared, from exile in the United States, the necessary conditions to resume the struggle against Spanish rule.

It was necessary to prevent in time, with the independence of Cuba, that the United States spread throughout the Antilles and falling, with that force, on our lands in the Americas, as Marti warned in a letter to his Mexican friend Manuel Mercado in May 1895.

That war in Cuban lands ended three years later, but without the desired freedom due to the US intervention, the speaker recalled.

Marti’s legacy is present in national unity, the existence of a single party to lead the destiny of the country and the unbreakable civic-military unity, Dallamy added.

It also has concrete expressions in the heroic and altruistic pages of Cuba’s collaborators in different parts of the world and in the resistance of the Cuban people against the US blockade, she said.
