The official told the national press that talks and diplomacy in tense situations do not always yield results and supported the Russian statement defining the actions in the Donbass as a “military operation”.

These statements follow Russia’s recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and the dispatch of troops to those territories to ensure border integrity, the Kremlin said.

As a consequence, on this day the president of the European Union executive, Ursula von der Leyen, announced a package of “massive and selective” measures against Russia, which the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, described as the strongest and toughest ever considered by Brussels.

For its part, the Ukrainian government decided to break diplomatic relations with Moscow, President Vladimir Zelensky stated.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the actions in the Donbass, and defined them as a military operation in self-defense against those who manipulate Ukraine.

This day’s events are not connected with the desire to infringe the interests of the neighboring nation, but with the protection of those who took it hostage and try to use it against our country and its people, Putin told the national television.
