Russia closes its airspace to 36 countries and territories

Moscow, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) reported that the country decided to close its airspace to 36 countries and territories in response to a similar measure against Russian aircraft.

In addition to the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Estonia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Poland, countries with which the Eurasian nation had already canceled flights, the updated list includes 26 more countries and territories, including Germany, Spain, Italy and France.

“In accordance with the norms of international law, in response to the ban by European states on flights by civilian aircraft operated by Russian airlines and/or registered in Russia, flights by airlines from 36 countries were restricted,” the statement said.

According to the text, flights from these countries can be made with a special permit issued by Rosaviatsiya or the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The list also includes Albania, Anguilla, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark (with Greenland and Faroe Islands), British Virgin Islands, Finland, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, the territory of Jersey, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.

On February 24, London closed its airspace to Russian aircraft. On the 27th, the Foreign Ministers of the 27 countries of the European Union approved the total closure of the Community airspace to Russian aircraft. Canada joined the measure.

For their part, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and the countries of the European Union imposed new sanctions on Russia, targeting the highest representatives of the State and the Government, as well as key sectors of trade, finance, energy, exports and aviation.
