Cuba highlights impact of transition to digital television

Havana, Mar 2 (Prensa Latina) The transition to digital television in Cuba will improve the quality of broadcasts and 4G mobile services, an expert said on Wednesday.

With the reorganization of TV broadcasts, which began this month in western Cuba, the 400-mHz band in the country’s radio spectrum will be released, so it will be used to improve cell phone services, Alejandro Ruiz Douglas, director of telecommunications at the Ministry of Communications, told national television.

He explained that the transition process has begun by the technical preparatory work and will be carried out progressively from Pinar del Rio to Matanzas provinces, although for a while the analog signal of four television channels will remain operational.

Ruiz Douglas explained that the development of this project contributes to reducing obsolete equipment, improves quality, reduces energy consumption, improves the image and implements other value-added services.

In order to respond to the population’s doubts and concerns, telephone numbers have been established in all the territories to provide information on the main technical problems that may arise when switching from one format to the other one.

Initially planned to be completed in 2023, the transition to digital television in Cuba was delayed due to financial restrictions in the country, but last year it received a boost mainly with the sale of devices to receive that type of signal.

The Government provided subsidies to vulnerable groups and credits to the industry and the general population for the production and marketing of decoder boxes and TV sets.
