Egypt insists on agreement with Ethiopia on mega-dam

Cairo, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) Egypt has insisted on an agreement with Ethiopia on the use of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), despite the tensions both countries currently maintain over this dam built on the Nile River.

Reaching an understanding among Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia would pave the way for the regional cooperation and integration, Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Mohamed Abdel Ati said.

During a meeting with European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber, the minister warned against the unilateral operation of the dam as he considered it would disrupt the water management system of the two other nations.

Abdel Ati also stressed the need for a full coordination in the filling and operation of the GERD.

Both Cairo and Khartoum are insisting on a legally binding agreement with Ethiopia about the issue.

The latest round of African Union-sponsored talks to resolve the decade-long dispute among Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia collapsed in April 2021.
