Russia announces blocking of Twitter in its territory

Moscow, March 4 (Prensa Latina) The social network Twitter is blocked in Russian territory, the Federal Service for the Supervision of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and the Media (Roskomnadzor) reported today.

According to the RKN universal service for checking the blocking of pages and sites, access to the resource twitter.com is limited in the Russian Federation according to the request of the General Prosecutor’s Office dated February 24.

Since March 1, Russia began to slow down the traffic of that social network on stationary computers “due to the dissemination by the site of unreliable socially significant information on the subject of a special military operation in Ukraine.”

Almost a year ago, Roskomnadzor slowed down access to Twitter on mobile and landline devices in Russia for not deleting information whose distribution is prohibited in the country.

On May 17, 2021, after that social network removed more than 91 percent of the prohibited information, Moscow lifted restrictions on access to fixed networks and the slowdown of Twitter traffic on mobile devices continued.

According to Roskomnadzor, more than 800 materials with illegal information remain unremoved, for which it sent about 1.7 thousand notifications to Twitter about the need to do so.

The Russian regulatory body noted the condition for lifting the access restriction “is the complete removal of identified prohibited materials from Twitter, as well as the cessation of participation in the confrontation of information, the dissemination of false news and calls for extremism”.

This Friday, Russia also announced that it blocks access to Facebook on the national territory.

In recent days, the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered that this network is involved in the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens.
