Panama, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) Following unsuccessful negotiations with the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (CAPAC), union leaders on Friday ratified the call for a national strike in demand of pay rises.

Marcos Andrade, secretary general of the National Confederation of Independent Trade Union Unity (CONUSI), told Prensa Latina that the pressure measure might begin in about 20 days after the expiration of the deadlines given in those talks, whose objective is to improve the workers’ conditions.

CAPAC is not reacting adequately facing the significant reduction of the purchasing power of the workers in the light of the accelerated rise in the cost of living and the basic food basket, due to the galloping inflation, first with Covid-19 and now aggravated as a consequence of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Andrade said.

Faced with those just demands, he pointed out, on the contrary, the oligarchy’s media accuse the workers of demanding exaggerated salaries and try to confront us with public opinion.

The strike will not be a solution to the problem, he said, we are also called to use social media to spread our message and defend the basic rights of the builders and their relatives.

On Thursday, CAPAC issued a communiqué about the unsuccessful conclusions of the talks with representatives of the National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries (SUNTRACS), in which the wage issue is the reason for differences.
