These elections, in which 16 political parties or movements are participating, are taking place in a context marked by social discontent due to the increase in the prices of basic products, especially food, and therefore an exorbitant growth of inflation that has surprised even financial experts.

In addition, more than 21 million people are living in poverty and unemployment is around 11,8% of the economically active population.

These legislative elections take place after the national strike of 2021, which generated the strongest social outburst of the last 70 years in the country and marked by a wide participation of the Colombian society, and at the same time by an overflow of violence and repression of the public forces against the demonstrators.

On the other hand, the current president, Iván Duque, is at a very low level of popularity and his government party does not have a leader to drag the masses in this electoral scenario.

The Peace Agreement is another of the elements on the table and may influence the voters’ ballot in view of its insufficient compliance expressed especially in the murder of social leaders and former guerrillas reincorporated to civilian life, as well as the persistent problems of land tenure.
