Cuba, always a power in the so-called “art of Fistiana”, celebrated four gold medals and a pair of bronze medals, in addition to applauding the medium-sized Jorge Daniel Forcades as the most outstanding competitor of the men’s tournament.
Forcades (67 kilograms), silver medalist at the Junior Pan-American Games of Cali-Valley 2021, exhibited his fencing skills in the ring to defeat Kazakhstan’s Ruslan Shakary and close a memorable individual performance.
The other winners from Cuba were Khriszthihan Barrera (75), Ronny Alvarez (86) and Adrian Fresneda (92), while Luis Frank Reynoso (80) and Ewart Andres Marin (54) climbed the lowest step of the awards podium.
Barrera knocked out Norway’s Adam Arsaev (unanimous decision, 5-0); Alvarez defeated Georgia’s Giorgi Dekanozishvli (3-2) in extremis, and Fresneda beat Greece’s Isidoros Kefallinos (RSC, second round).
Only Kazakhstan surpassed in the overall ranking the Cuban delegation, which was able to win awards in each of the categories in which it competed during the 31st edition of the under-20 event.
