The demonstrators carried placards and demanded the fulfillment of their demands in front of the gates of the main hospitals in the country. “We will get what is our right” or “auxiliary doctors are not slaves” were some of the texts raised by the protesters, according to national television.

The strikers also protested against recent comments by the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who called doctors and medical students who leave Turkey, or threaten to do so, in search of better working conditions, ” hungry for money.”

The protest, called by the Turkish Medical Association, seeks a salary increase of at least 150 percent and various sector reforms, including an end to precarious employment in private health-care institutions and “better retirement conditions,” the organizers said.
