This Friday Vietnam reported 163,174 people infected with the disease -a figure surpassed only by South Korea and Germany- and reached 7,367,112, with a daily average this month exceeding 175,000.
Hanoi, the capital, also seems to be reducing the number of infections, since its maximum (32,650) dates back to March 8 and today it reported 9,072 less.
The Health Ministry also reported 57 deaths – the number is also trending downwards – bringing the accumulated total to 41,740.
Until April last year, this was one of the countries that was best dealing with Covid-19 (3,428 cases, 35 deaths), but the irruption of the Delta variant at the end of that month, and Omicron late in December, pushed the statistics up to the current level.
Vietnam is focused on achieving herd immunity through vaccination. So far, nearly 82 of its 98 million people have completed the two-dose immunization schedule and 46 percent have completed a third booster.
