Madrid ignores that the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, the International and European Courts of Justice and all regional organizations do not recognize any sovereignty of Morocco over Western Sahara, the text underlines.
It adds that the US Congress recently issued a statement in support of the continuation of the UN-led political process to achieve a just, permanent and mutually acceptable political solution in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.
The editorial, entitled “When masks fall”, concludes that the Spanish recognition is an apparent “ransom payment” to the Makhzen who brandished the migratory charter and the status of the enclave of Ceuta and Melilla”.
Makhzen is a term of derogatory nuance that designated the Moroccan State in ancient times and is currently used to name its oligarchy or shadow government.
