In his video message to the Economic Sustainability Summit -organized by the specialized magazine The Economist- Mr. Guterres stressed that the “addiction” to fossil fuel is mutually assured destruction.

Present situation clearly shows that dependence on fossil fuel puts both global economy and energy security at the mercy of fluctuations and geopolitical crises, Mr. Guterres stated, while calling for pressing steps to be taken in this regard.

As he detailed, the Covid-19 pandemic, Ukraine conflict and the lack of political will undermine efforts to curb global warming and push the goals of cutting polluting emissions even further away.

Right now, he stressed, the fallout of the Ukraine conflict threatens to disrupt global food and energy markets with baneful implications for the global climate agenda.
