Oxfam closes program in Cuba after 30 years working for development

Havana, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) The non-governmental organization Oxfam closed its program in Cuba after nearly 30 years of work with 127 national institutions in favor of resilient development at the local level, its directors said in this capital on Tuesday.

The departure is the result of a global review of its model that has been underway for two years, which was accelerated by the impact on finances and the difficulties in raising funds in many countries as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Oxfam Representative in Cuba Elena Gentili noted.

A team subordinate to the representation in Canada will remain in the country for two years to supervise the commitments made before the decision to withdraw, she added.

Among the activities organized for the closing, on March 24 and 25, a reunion day will be held between protagonists and witnesses of the history of Oxfam in Cuba, in which the report “The Value of Cooperation: Seeds that Germinate” will be presented.

The planned program will review relevant approaches, methodologies, strategies and practices of its cooperation in the country, which will be available on a new virtual platform called Resilient Cuba.

During its three decades of work in Cub, the organization accompanied the design and implementation of public policies such as the Gender Strategy of the Agriculture System, the National Program for the Advancement of Women, the Life Task and the National Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education Plan, among others.

In addition, Oxfam has worked on projects related to the prevention and care of violence against women and feminism as a conception to address care work and co-responsibility.
