He made the statement at his morning press conference in the state of Morelos, in response to a question about comments by U.S. Northern Command chief Glen VanHerck saying that Russia has more intelligence agents in Mexico than in any other country.

Lopez Obrador said he will not question anything, we are respectful of the free expression of ideas, but Mexico is free, independent and sovereign and this must be acknowledged more and more because sometimes this is not understood.

Those who are criminals, commit crimes, are detained, they are not allowed to go free. We do not go to Moscow to spy on anyone, nor do we go to Beijing to spy on what they are doing in China, nor do we go to Washington, not even to Los Angeles, to get involved in that, he said.

It should also be understood that we have as our policy the phrase of Benito Juarez that “between individuals as well as between nations, respect for the rights of others is peace” and we have been doing that from the beginning.
