Solar panels benefit families in remote Cuban regions

Ciego de Avila, Cuba, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) The installation of photovoltaic solar systems is currently benefitting some 60 families living in remote regions in this central Cuban province, a Government strategy to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants.

This is part of a joint program among the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the European Union, to electrify 167 houses isolated of the National Energy System.

Viviana Martinez, investment specialist at the Electricity Company in Ciego de Avila, pointed out that the two kilowatt modules allow the installation of several household appliances and have a five-to-eight-year useful life.

This technology will benefit homes in isolated settlements that lack electric service or are favored by mini-hydroelectric power plants, which in times of drought are susceptible to do without water and energy, Martinez explained.
