Cuba rejects EU interference in internal affairs

Havana, March 30 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Wednesday strongly rejected the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell´s interference in internal affairs.

“Only our courts, and not any European authority, are empowered to issue sentences in strict adherence to due legal process,” the Cuban minister live-tweeted, while emphasizing that the EU should deal with episodes of repression occurring in its member states and minors detained in their prisons. “The EU, which acts with obvious double standards, does not have any right or moral authority to meddle in matters that only concern the Cuban State,” he added.

In a recent statement, Mr. Borrell expressed “deep concern” about judicial sentences handed down against people involved in July 11 insurrections in Cuba.

On January 25, the Attorney General’s Office reported that, as a result of investigations into the July 11 incidents.

Attorneys representing those involved in criminal proceedings assured that constitutional guarantees have been respected in trials.

Cuban television has aired several reports on these trials in which defendants and relatives confirmed the transparency and legality of the process in court.
