This referendum shows the willingness of the Cuban government to involve the Cuban community abroad in the debate and hear their opinions in order to influence the decisions within the nation, Alejandro Fuentes, advisor of the Cuban embassy to this capital, told Prensa Latina.

A remarkable contribution of this code is respect to children, education of new generations to appreciate minors in the family, he said.

Fuentes added that the Code preserves minors’ rights, not only as subjects who have to be provided for and fed, but also as human beings who grow up physically, emotionally and intellectually, and that has an eventual positive impact on the stregthening of humanitarian values in society.

He described as a “substantial contribution” the approach to adoption that updates this phenomenon, according to standards included as basic premises of modern societies.

It also facilitates the speeding up of paperwork for adoption for couples who are interested in offering protection, education and forming a family with children who do not have the much-needed care from their biological parents, for one reason or another, the official noted.

The Code has a high humane component as it is about protecting everybody regardless of their gender or sexual orientation, Yuniet Escobar, a Cuban resident in this capital, told Prensa Latina.
