Bolivian lawmaker Virginia Velasco warns against gender violence

La Paz, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) Legislator Virginia Velasco on Tuesday urged subnational governments to strengthen the attention, prevention and punishment of violence from the Municipal Integral Legal Services (SLIM) and with a gender approach.

“In statements to the state channel Bolivia TV, the senator said, “We must work on issues of attention, prevention and punishment of violence from the municipalities.”

The member of the Plurinational Legislative Assembly insisted on the need for the SLIM to fulfill its mission from a gender, de-partriacalization and decolonization perspective in order to confront the machismo that still prevails in the Andean-Amazonian country.

According to Velasco, territorial governments should focus not only on budget execution but also on gender issues.

Velasco noted that government structures at all levels, social organizations and the entire civil society must work on the implementation of values and principles with the objective of eliminating violence against women and children.

A report from the Attorney General’s Office published on Monday confirmed that in the first 94 days of 2022, Bolivia reported 23 femicides and 423 cases of human trafficking.

Out of the total number of femicides, 10 were perpetrated in the department of La Paz, seven in Santa Cruz, three in Cochabamba, two in Beni and one in Potosi.

When comparing the situation with that of the previous year, the source noted that up to March 31, 2021, Bolivia had reported 31 femicides.
