“The great essayist Ambrosio Fornet passed away. Always generous, always sharp, always helping young people, always close to our institution, his absence leaves us with deepest pain. May his widow, his children and grandchildren, his friends, receive a very strong hug,” Prieto wrote on Twitter.
Fornet developed a prestigious career as a writer, essayist, researcher, film scriptwriter and editor.
He was recognized as a full member of the Cuban Academy of the Spanish Language. He also taught at the University of the Arts (ISA).
He received the National Publishing Award in 2002 and the National Literature Award in 2009, in addition to important distinctions such as the National Culture Award.
