Peru’s President declares state of emergency

Lima, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, announced a state of emergency and a virtual 22-hour curfew for today in this capital and the neighboring harbor of Callao, in the misdt of the turbulent protests by different sectors.

In a brief televised message after an extraordinary session of the Ministers Council, the president announced that the Council agreed to apply the measure in view of the violence taken place during a strike of transportation workers, both in Lima and other provinces provinces.

In addition, he indicated that a state of citizen immobility (equivalent to a curfew) was decreed in the capital city, from 02:00 local time today until midnight, without affecting the essential services’ supply.

He maintained that some groups want to create general insecurity and anxiety by blocking traffic in the accesses to Lima and Callao, and the state of emergency is imposed “in order to reestablish internal order”.

The president called to wait for the results and keep calm and stated that social protest is a constitutional right, but it must be exercised within the framework of the law and respecting the integrity of the people, as well as public and private property.
