That is the answer to the question of why Cuba is the only country in the region that has its own vaccines, as expressed in an article about the administration of more than 35 million of vaccine doses to fight Covid-19 to more than 89 percent of the Caribbean island’s population.

The article refers to Abdala, Cuba’s first vaccine against Covid-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean, authorized on July 9, 2021, and which demonstrated 92.28 percent of efficacy in preventing the disease.

The other two Cuban homegrown vaccines are Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, which were certified by the State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed), the magazine added.

Since 2012, Cuba’s biotechnology industry has been developed under the umbrella of BioCubaFarma, which groups 32 companies and supplies more than 800 products to the healthcare system. It produces eight of ten vaccines used annually and exports its products to more than 50 countries.
