Venezuela demands release of diplomat Alex Saab imprisoned in US

Caracas, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) Political and social organizations in Venezuela demanded in Petare neighborhood, east of Caracas, the release of diplomat Alex Saab, imprisoned in the United States under alleged charges of money laundering.

The Free Alex Saab Movement, accompanied by the group of volunteer lawyers in defense of the diplomat, on Monday reiterated its rejection of the illegal detention and violation of his diplomatic immunity as a special envoy of the Venezuelan State.

Speaking to the popular gathering, Camilla Fabri, wife of the diplomat, thanked the Venezuelan people for their permanent support for the demand for Saab’s release and the condemnation of Washington’s constant violations of international regulations.

After 491 days of illegal detention in Cape Verde, Saab was extradited to the United States on October 16, where a court in the city of Miami charged him with several counts of money laundering and conspiracy, all of which were dismissed by the defense with solid arguments.

Venezuela accredited Alex Saab in 2018 as a special envoy, whose duties consisted of facilitating the procurement of medical supplies, food and other essential goods, in the face of obstacles imposed by the US blockade.

In mid-2020, the official was detained in Cape Verde at the request of Washington during a technical stopover of the aircraft carrying him, in disregard of the inviolability of the immunity corresponding to his diplomatic investiture.

The Venezuelan government has denounced his detention was in response to the US administration’s campaign of hostile economic measures against Venezuela to inflict more suffering on the people and destabilize its institutions and internal order.
