National talks in Dominican Republic fail to make progress

National talks in Dominican Republic fail to make progress

Santo Domingo, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) The National Dialogue convened by the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, to discuss various proposals for reforms in the country, continues on Wednesday without significant progress.

The apple of discord within the process is the constitutional reform project that has many headwinds, but the rest of the initiatives in the hands of the Economic and Social Council do not seem to be very favorable either.

With respect to the reform of the Constitution, the opposition parties expressed their rejection and decided not to participate as they consider it unnecessary, especially at these times of crisis.

While the government insists on hastening the discussion, the aforementioned organizations are adamant that they will not accept to modify the Constitution as it is not a priority, and instead recommend that authorities focus on dealing with inflation.

The Executive Branch declared to have the intention of reintroducing the proposal in the negotiation table and that it will do so “with or without the presence of the other parties,” we shall see.
