Cuban president recalls heroine of the Revolution

Havana, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Thursday commemorated the 92nd birthday of the heroine of the Revolution Vilma Espin, whom he described as the undisputed leader of the world women's movement.

On his Twitter account, the president highlighted her work in the defense and emancipation of women.

Today would be the 92nd birthday of our Vilma, a heroine, founder, mother; together with Fidel Castro, she created the Cuban Women’s Federation (FMC), promoting an unprecedented work of social justice, he wrote.

Also on Twitter, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero wrote that Vilma Espin is a paradigm of Cuban women of all times. Her revolutionary and humanistic thinking is present in the new Family Code.

The revolutionary leader was a member of the 26th of July Movement and fought in the Sierra Maestra (east) along with the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

After the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, she worked to guarantee the rights of women. On August 23, 1960, she founded the Cuban Women’s Federation.

She passed away in 2007 and her remains rest in a Mausoleum of the Frank Pais Second Eastern Front, in Santiago de Cuba.
