Sri Lankans demand president’s resignation

Colombo, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) Over 100,000 people took to the Galle Face park and its surroundings, in the heart of Colombo, Sri Lanka's financial and commercial capital, to call for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation, local media reported on Monday.

The demonstrators promised to carry on their protests until their demands are met, The Morning daily reported.

Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since it became independent from the United Kingdom in 1948.

People have been protesting for weeks due to long blackouts and shortages of gas, food and other staples.

Since Saturday at noon, the demonstrators have taken to the Galle Face park, where the Presidential Secretariat is located.

Witnesses claimed that some of them stayed awake the whole night.

Mass street protests broke out after a crowd in front of Rajapaksa’s house was attacked with tear gases and several people were arrested on March 31, although they were granted bail later.
