A total of 37 teams and more than 250 players from universities, schools, work centers and community projects, in addition to representatives of Colombia are taking part in the tournament, which opened on Monday at the Habana Libre Hotel.

The first Grand Master of Ibero-America, Vivian Ramon, from Cuba, and director of the aforementioned chess center, welcomed the participants after two years without holding the competition, due to the international health situation caused by Covid-19.

The competition will also include a scientific event, in which the methodological-formative aspects of chess teaching in Cuba and the advanced methods in teaching and training will be discussed.

According to Ramon, the tournament seeks to transmit sporting, socializing and pedagogical values, as well as to exalt the effort and competitive achievement.

Osvaldo Vento, president of the Cuban Sports Institute; Raul Fournier, vice president of that institution, and Master of Science Silvano Merced, rector of the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences, were present at the opening ceremony.
