Havana, Apr 14 (Prensa Latina) The Omicron BA-2 variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has spread to ten Cuban provinces of Cuba, prompting authorities to call to maintain health measures to prevent contagion.

According to the national director of Epidemiology at the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), Dr. Francisco Duran, the new variant is less virulent, but more contagious.

Early this week, the provinces of Mayabeque, Ciego de Avila and Camagüey reported the highest numbers of positive cases in one day, while Sancti Spiritus, Holguin, Villa Clara and Havana have managed to contain the contagions gradually.

Dr. Duran stated that in order to stop wearing the mask it is necessary to wait for a certain balance to be achieved in the world, as there are cases of countries that went back to normality and have regressed as a result of new outbreaks.

The expert explained that those who have contracted Covid-19 are immune for a while, but this temporary immunity, coupled with the administration of vaccines, makes for a favorable combination to decrease contagions.

According to Minsap, 95.7 percent of Cuba’s population has received the full vaccination scheme, and 76.6 percent has received a fourth booster dose.
