Mexico City, Apr 16 (Prensa Latina) The arrival of international travelers to Mexico has reached levels at this time above those recorded in 2019, the Anahuac Center for Tourism Research and Competitiveness (Cicotur, in Spanish) indicated today.

Cicotur reported that, during the first quarter Cancun, Mexico’s main destination, received 4.2 percent more travelers than in the aforementioned period. During March alone, the rise was 9.4, while Los Cabos shows an increase of 6.5 against the first three months of 2019, and in March it also grew in the same range.

Only Puerto Vallarta shows a contraction of 5.8 percent for the first three months. It is noteworthy that Puerto Vallarta Airport, which serves that destination and the Riviera Nayarit, shows a significant accumulated lag of 15.6 compared to 2019, it clarifies.

The agency details that in March, the set of three airports that receive 69.6 percent of international passengers registered positive monthly differences of 1.0 percent and on an annual basis of 7.3.

Last year, Cancun was the second most important destination worldwide only behind Dubai due to the fact that Mexico did not impose travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2021, Quintana Roo recovered more than 80 percent of the tourist influx recorded prior to the pandemic and by the first quarter of this year had four million capacities available, according to data from the Quintana Roo Ministry of Tourism.

The federal Ministry of Tourism forecasts that, for this year, Mexico could receive some 40.3 million international tourists, which would imply a growth of 8.3 million more travelers than in 2021, that is, a growth of 25.6 percent.
