Hanoi, Apr 16 (Prensa Latina) Vietnam today reported 18,470 cases of Covid-19, the lowest figure since February 8, and in practice is facing it as an endemic disease due to the low lethality of the Omicron variant.

In all, 10,417,887 people have got infected with the disease in this Indo-Chinese country, the twelfth highest number in the world and the third in Asia after India and South Korea.

In the capital, the hottest point of the current fourth wave of the disease, infections are also on the decline: from a peak of 32,650 on March 8, this Saturday there were only 1,361, that is, 24 times less.

The number of deaths is also declining: from 283 reported on December 15, 2021, only 10 deaths were reported today, bringing the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 42,934.

Vietnam, on the other hand, is making progress in its efforts to achieve herd immunity through vaccination. Of its 98 million inhabitants, some 86 percent has completed the two-dose immunization schedule and 55 percent have completed a third booster.

As the days go by, the number of hospitalizations, serious cases and deaths is low compared to the worst moments of the pandemic, allowing the country to relax prevention measures and enter a new normality of economic and social life.
