Chinese Parliament opens sessions focusing on women’s protection

Beijing, Apr 18 (Prensa Latina) China's National People's Congress (Parliament) on Monday began a new session with an agenda that focuses on the review of a bill to introduce stricter rules against trafficking in women.

The Standing Committee of that legislative body opened the meeting precisely with the presentation of the text for a second reading.

The bills instructs marriage registration institutions, local governments and women’s associations to report to the police if they suspect cases of trafficking or kidnapping.

It comes amid a State offensive and the call from experts who demand a tough hand against trafficking in women, the rescue of kidnapped women and raising sanctions for buyers, who often rape them, force them into forced labor and mistreat the victims.

All these initiatives follow the recent national uproar caused by the abuse against a woman who suffered from schizophrenia in eastern Jiangsu province.

In the wake of this incident, Chinese lawmakers and policy advisors placed rural villages in the spotlight as being the places most prone to the phenomenon, as well as the promotion of more development opportunities in local economies for women.
