Chile hosts first summit of the environmentalist Escazú Agreement

Santiago de Chile, Apr 20 (Prensa Latina) Chile will host the first summit of the Ecuazú Agreement, which will bring together Latin American countries signatories of the agreement, the only one in the world for protection of environmental activists.

The Conference of the Parties willl address financial measures for the agreements´s implementation, its functioning and strategies, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal, in Spanish) explained in a press release.

The nation´s president, Gabriel Boric, will lead today the inauguration of this firts meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Escazú Agreement, approved in 2018 after six years of negotiation, the organization said.

The meeting that will be held until Friday in the Cepal headquarters here, convenes authorities and official representatives of signatory countries of the document and others in the process of signing it, to check the status of the agreement´s implementation.

The agenda includes speeches of the vice-president of Costan Rica, Epsy Campbell Barr (virtual); the secretary for Climate Change of Argentina, Cecilia Nicolini and Cepal Acting Executive Secretary, Mari Cimoli.

Friday’s closing session will include a high-level event on the celebration of the first anniversary of the entry into force of the agreement and International Mother Earth Day, both commemorated on the same day.
