Argentine president recalls trials of dictators

Buenos Aires, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Friday recalled the beginning in 1985 of the trials of the military dictatorships established from 1976 to 1983, which were responsible for the disappearance and assassination of more than 30,000 people.

Thirty-seven years ago, the Argentinean people broke the silence against impunity. The trial of the Juntas raised the awareness of the whole world, the president wrote on his Twitter account.

The decision by Raul Alfonsin (Argentina’s first president after the return to democracy) to prosecute the military chiefs who ordered the persecution, torture, deaths and disappearances laid the foundations of one of our most solid social agreements, Never Again, the head of State added.

By virtue of presidential decrees, the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons was created in 1983 and the trials of against Jorge Rafael Videla, Emilio Eduardo Massera, Orlando Ramon Agosti, Roberto Eduardo Viola, Armando Lambruschini, Omar Domingo Rubens, Leopoldo Galtieri, Jorge Anaya and Basilio Lami Dozo began in 1985.

The Federal Chamber sentenced Videla and Massera to life imprisonment; Agosti to four years and six months in prison; Viola to 17 years; and Lambruschini to eight years; while Graffigna, Galtieri, Anaya and Lami Dozo were acquitted.

The sentences granted to five of nine defendants were considered a historic event and against the impunity of State terrorism.

Nevertheless, the relatives and friends of thousands of victims of the dictatorship continued to demand the continuity of the investigations and the enforcement of the law against all those responsible for the crimes.
