Mexico City, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) The Mexican newspaper La Jornada highlighted in its editorial the dialogue between the governments of the United States and Mexico on migration, and advocated that it be the beginning of broader conversations.

It pointed out that the negotiations are resuming in the midst of an emigration from the island, most of which transits through Mexico, and highlighted that it is the first high-level bilateral meeting since Joe Biden arrived at the White House.

The newspaper recalled that former Democratic President Barack Obama initiated a historic rapprochement and promoted the thawing of bilateral ties by canceling some measures of economic asphyxiation of the island.

That progress collapsed during the administration of Donald Trump (2017-2021), who established a series of restrictions not even contemplated in the legal-institutional framework that makes up the economic blockade with which Washington has been determined to derail the Cuban revolution for six decades, it added.

The text pointed out that in the last days of his term Trump forced the closure of Western Union offices in Cuban territory, a hard blow to families receiving remittances, and, through an anomalous process, decreed the return of Cuba to the list of “terrorism-sponsoring” nations, to disconnect it from the international financial and economic system.

In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the strangulation against the island took a homicidal turn by hindering the importation of the necessary supplies to treat the infected population, and preventing the production and application of the vaccines developed by Cuba itself, the newspaper pointed out.
