Cuban Olympic champion presents project to find talents

Havana, Apr 26 (Prensa Latina) Latin America's first female Olympic champion, javelinist Maria Caridad Colon, from Cuba, will present here on Tuesday and in the next to days a project to promote the search for talents at the University of Sports.

The synthetic track for athletics at the University will host the call, aimed at discovering future athletes in the different modalities like hammer, shot put and discus.

In that regard, the initiative will also have a second day dedicated to discuss the search for children and adolescents who have aptitudes for track and field, the gold medalist at the Moscow 1980 Olympics told Prensa Latina via Facebook.

The full member of the International Olympic Committee commented that she will be accompanied by other glories of athletics in Cuba, such as Osleidys Menendez, Olympic gold medalist in Athens 2004; Ivon Leal, Xiomara Rivero, Sonia Bicet and Mayra Vila, among others.

We want to transmit to the new generations of athletes in Havana and the country our experiences as athletes, so that they know the training we had and we also want to see them in competition, she said.

Colon pointed out that they chose the name “Golondrina” (Swallow) for the project because that was the name of the javelin brand with which she won the historic Olympic title.
