According to the spokeswoman of the local Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, Wednesday’s event was “the result of a long process of negotiations” between the parties.

The 53-year-old Russian pilot was arrested in 2010 in Liberia and transferred to the North American nation on charges of trafficking cocaine shipments, some of which was destined for the United States.

In 2011, Yaroshenko received a 20-year sentence, which he was serving at Fort Dix prison in the state of New Jersey.

Meanwhile, former Marine and student Reed was convicted of drunken assault on two policemen in Moscow in 2019. A year later, he was sentenced to nine years in prison and ordered to pay restitution to the assaulted officers, although he did not acknowledge his guilt.
