The Institute of Meteorology issued its forecast for the 2022 season, from June 1 to November 30, which it considered active due to the possibility of the occurrence of 17 such natural organisms, nine of which could reach hurricane category.

In order to evaluate the forecast and the possible impact of extreme hydrometeorological events as well as the plans to face them, the country will carry out on May 21 and 22 the popular exercise aimed at disaster risk reduction Meteoro 2022.

The activity will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the island’s civil defense system, which currently prioritizes prevention through the development of scientific research and the strengthening of the early warning system.

Also included in the actions planned during the popular exercise are the evaluation of the plans for dealing with drought and associated forest fires and the experiences of the work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The director of the Institute of Meteorology, Celso Pazos pointed out that in the period it is forecast that there is a 60% probability of the formation and strengthening of a cyclone in the Caribbean basin, which increases the risk of such an organism impacting Cuba.
