Earthquake 5.1-Richter-scale in Guatemala causes no damage

Guatemala City, May 9 (Prensa Latina) The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction in Guatemala confirmed that the 5.1 earthquake on the Richter scale that occurred on Monday did not cause human or material damage.

According to the source, its epicenter was registered in the coasts of the southern department of Escuintla, at about 07:26 local time. It lasted 26 seconds and had a depth of 16.17 kilometers.

Users on social media said that the earthquake was felt in several parts of the country and in this capital, without major consequences, only the fright before this type of phenomenon.

On Monday, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology reported another 33 tremors in the past 24 hours between three and four degrees on the Richter scale, most of them imperceptible.

Guatemala is a highly seismic country due to the union of three tectonic plates, Caribbean, Cocos and North America, hence the constant calls of the relief corps and authorities to have ready the 24-hour backpack (Family Response Plan) and follow the recommendations for this type of events.
