Zhao Lijian, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, supported the position defended by the Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in favor of holding this conclave with the participation of all the countries in the area.

He deplored that almost 200 years after proposing the Monroe Doctrine, the White House continues to act under the principle of “America only for the United States”, in addition to treating Latin American and Caribbean territories as its backyard and harassing them instead of helping them.

“Not only does it have development and prosperity without benefiting Latin America, but it has exploited the subcontinent, imposed indiscriminate sanctions, exported inflation, promoted political interference and subversion, as well as the assassination of leaders and even armed aggression,” Zhao remarked.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the United States should respect the sovereignty and dignity of the countries in that region in accordance with the basic rules of international relations.

He also emphasized that the Monroe Doctrine has no place in Latin America and the Caribbean, nor in other parts of the world.

The Summit of the Americas is scheduled to be held from June 6 to 10 in Los Angeles.
