Nearly half of the Afghan population faces acute hunger

United Nations, May 10 (Prensa Latina) Almost half of the population of Afghanistan, over 19 million people, will face acute hunger, according to a report by various UN agencies.

According to the joint report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Food Program and partner non-governmental organizations, more than 20,000 people in the northeastern province of Ghor will face catastrophic levels of food insecurity, amid difficult circumstances created by a long, harsh winter and disastrous agricultural conditions, as noted by the official UN news site.

At the end of March this year, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned that the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan worsens every day and that greater support from the international community for the country is urgently needed.

Guterres said at the Afghanistan Conference that 95 percent of Afghans don’t have enough to eat and nine million are at risk of famine.

“Unless we take action soon, 97 percent of Afghans could be living below the poverty line by the middle of this year”, Guterres said

Guterres further highlighted how the massive humanitarian response in Afghanistan since August 2021 helped save many lives during the winter, and expressed his gratitude to international donors for their contributions.

However, he noted, despite collective efforts, the already dire humanitarian situation is deteriorating alarmingly. After the departure of the United States forces, after some 20 years of military occupation, and the return to power of the Taliban movement in August 2021, the crisis in Afghanistan worsened.
