Uruguayan dock workers remain on strike against massive layoffs

Montevideo, May 10 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan Port Union (Supra) obtained today a 90-day postponement from the Montecon company of the planned dismissal of 150 workers, but maintained the strike for this cause in search of guaranteed solutions.

At the same time, he expressed distrust in a proposal to unblock the conflict presented during a meeting by the Labor Minister, Pablo Mieres, consisting of a subsidy to the affected personnel of 70 percent of the salary for one year.

According to him, there would be 127 new jobs available at the Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) and the National Ports Administration (ANP), and a priority would be established for the hiring of those dismissed by Montecon.

But in a note, TCP, whose 80 percent is controlled by the multinational Katoen Natie, only committed itself to incorporate in one year around 77 jobs and another note from the ANP, to incorporate in that period another 50. The president of Supra, Alejandro Diaz, reiterated that a solution is being sought for all those laid off or that instead there should be unemployment insurance with 100 percent of salary, in the context that these job losses were consequences of the government’s agreement to grant a 50-year monopoly to Katoen Natie.
