Murder of Palestinian journalist sparks debate in Israeli parliament

Tel Aviv, May 11 (Prensa Latina) The murder of a Palestinian journalist while covering an Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank sparked a bitter debate in the Knesset (Parliament) when Justice Minister Gideon Saar tried to justify the crime.

The facts are that during an operation by security forces to arrest suspects in the city of Jenin clashes broke out, but the Palestinians as usual were quick to launch blood libels, Saar claimed in a debate in that body.

“There are seven testimonies of reporters who ascertained the facts, instead of apologizing and condemning the murder, you call it a blood libel,” lawmaker Osama Saadi of the Joint List responded, an alliance of Arab and leftist parties.

This is not just a death, it is a murder and an execution of a prominent journalist, Saadi said, referring to Sheerin Abu Aqla, 51, who worked for the Arab television station Al Jazeera.

According to Defense Minister Benny Gantz, Palestinian militiamen killed Abu Aqla by mistake this morning while exchanging fire with the military, although this version is rejected by several witnesses, among them also journalist Ali Samoudi, who was shot in the back.

Several Israeli parliamentarians denounced the new crime and demanded justice.

She was shot dead by the army in front of other colleagues, she became this morning another victim of the occupation, MP and Joint List leader Ayman Odeh wrote on Twitter.

The usual claim that “the army is investigating the incident” is provocative, false and outrageous. Shoot, lie and cover up: we already know this mechanism too well, denounced, in turn, also lawmaker Ahmad Tibi.
