According to a joint statement issued today by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin, the European country should apply to join the military bloc as soon as possible.

The formal decision on the issue will be taken next Sunday, May 15, despite repeated complaints by the Russian Federation about the expansion of the Atlantic alliance towards the East, which it considers a threat to its borders.

The NATO meeting of heads of State and government will take place in Madrid from June 28 to 30.

Its participants will adopt a new strategic concept, consider the strengthening of the alliance and the implications of global climate change for the security sector.

Finland’s traditional neutral stance changed after the outbreak of the war in eastern Ukraine.
