In the statement, Mussallam demanded an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that those responsible do not go unpunished in connection with the death the day before of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, of the al Jazeera network.

For the executive, the killing of a clearly identified media professional in a conflict zone constitutes a violation of international laws and standards.

“Without the protection of those who carry the reality and the voice of the oppressed, we cannot forge a better, more just and equitable future, nor can we achieve a third, sustainable and inclusive path of development for the people,” he said.

As once again the crime of silencing the truth is committed, the Secretary-General conveys his condolences to the people and Government of Palestine, a Member State of ECO, and to the family of Abu Akleh, with sympathetic friendship in their grief.

The journalist died Wednesday after being shot in the head while covering a raid by Israeli security forces in the city of Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank.

Several governments, international organizations and personalities condemned the incident and demanded explanations from Israel.
